Week 2: Angular / React – Software Engineering Track

by Glen Paul Florendo

HTML, CSS, JavaScript. What a great start to Week 2 of our Software Engineering career track! Although we each had different skills levels, we were able to work together and help elevate each other to achieve a solid foundation of fundamentals.

We began developing our own personal portfolios after just learning HTML and CSS. Personally, I struggled with CSS Flexbox and responsive design, since they are so new to me, but working through my portfolio helped me grasp the basics fairly quickly. While everyone had their own struggles, it was really amazing to see what everyone could do with just HTML and CSS. This portfolio project is definitely something we can use in our professional careers, so I’m really hoping that, if we push ourselves and invest more of our own time to work on it, it could be something really creative that we can be proud of!

Now, JavaScript was a whole different challenge. We were paired to solve challenging toy problems using higher-order functions we had just learned. My partner and I shared ideas and explained concepts to each other in order to come up with really elegant solutions. Pair programming was definitely a great way to learn new programming techniques. I’ll definitely continue to work and ask questions with my team, since it’s one of the best ways to learn!

Stay tuned for the coming weeks because our software engineering career in Angular / React is right around the corner.
