Week 2 of Talent Path – Data / Business Analyst Track
by Joseph Price
It is week two here at Talent Path and I am excited to share with you all what we have been up to. So, I think my colleague, Vismaya, brought everyone to up-to-speed on our oil & gas industry discussions and the fact that we are a team working towards becoming business / data analysts. I wanted to share a little about what we did this week for those of you thinking to join Talent Path and get some assistance with driving your career.
This past week we learned about SQL and it was a challenging week due to the nature of the subject. However, we all put in the extra effort to understand the concepts and apply them to our case studies. I was pretty confident about my SQL knowledge, since I took upper level SQL classes in college, but I quickly learned that business rules are difficult to translate into queries. We began the week learning how to translate business rules into a database structure which is a crucial skill for a business / data analyst due to the natural division of the two sides.
Later in the week we started our SQL case study. We split into teams of four and were required to interview a client and gather their business requirements. We had to put a lot of effort into asking the right questions, so that we could understand their problem and get access to all the correct databases. Because each group asked different questions and received different data, each presentation was truly unique. After creating all of the correct queries, it was time to present our solution to the CEO. I am not going to lie. It was a little intimidating, but we were all confident in the quality of our work and our ability to communicate our results.
I’m glad that we went into so much detail to learn SQL. Even though the material was difficult and dry at times, being able to participate in practical scenarios made it all worthwhile. Even in a week, it is amazing that I am much more confident in my ability to write and communicate SQL as opposed to when I graduated. I look forward to many more productive weeks in Talent Path.
