Week 7: Angular / React – Software Engineering Track
by Devon Marantz, Software Engineer, Talent Path
During Week 7, we continued to work on the Pokémon app from the week prior. One thing we learned in particular was Google Firebase, how it worked, and then implemented that into our Pokémon app. Google Firebase is a Google mobile and web application development platform that works as an online database. After learning about this, we got to incorporate it into our Pokémon application that we had been working on for a while and got to use it as our database for the app. Once we implemented it, we were able to view all our changes that we made to the app online and were then able to access our database in real time through Google.
We also worked a lot that week on learning more about React, routing, and PropTypes. However, the highlight of week 7 was definitely our field trip to Blizzard Arena in Los Angeles. One of our co-workers knew someone that worked there and organized a team outing for us to tour the facilities, which was really nice. We got to see what their teams were working on, what the work environment was like, and what their culture was like.
They also explained to us what type of technologies that they’re using for their different teams as well as what they look for in their developers. It was really nice to see what it looks like firsthand to work in the technology field. This was by far the best part of Week 7, as we were all so excited and looking forward to that tour. It was beneficial to see what our options in the technology field are and to be encouraged and get an idea of what we have to look forward to when we leave Talent Path and dive into our technology careers.
For me, something that I really benefited from was getting access to a network of people doing the same thing that I’m doing. Being able to be surrounded by other developers around my age was really nice and I now have many role models to look up to. My instructor, Andrew, is a really great resource and knows a lot about the industry. What I love about Talent Path is that they take the time to understand what our skill sets are before teaching and training us. Andrew is really good at listening to all of us and catering the instructions and lessons towards our abilities.
I recommend this program because it’s a good option for someone who wants to brush up on their technology skills and learn what it’s like to work in the industry. This is definitely a great program for someone that’s coming straight out of college that hasn’t been getting any luck with applying to technology jobs and needs to gain that experience in order to do so.
