Week 8: Angular / React – Software Engineering Track

by Brock Jameson, Software Engineer, Talent Path

What I like best about Talent Path is that I got the opportunity to continue learning and improving my skills, while working in the technology field. I’ve learned so much every week, especially week 8 when we began working on Project Aura. For this project, we got to work in teams of seven on creating our own React application.

We wanted to build an application for people to use to be able to pick up their devices and find places to go nearby in the Los Angeles area based on the ambiance or aura of the place. This application lists a bunch of nearby restaurants, shops, etc., similar to Yelp, but instead we wanted to kind of tailor people’s experiences for them and introduce the idea of providing places that are the best fit for their aura. It was a really cool project and I’m glad that I got to learn the skills to create something like this. We’ve been working lately on learning React and node through the creation of projects and I’ve been able to not only work on JavaScript further, but also work on my problem-solving skills.

In addition, I took the knowledge that I gained from week 8 and started working on my own portfolio and personal website that showcases all my work. I also started making a react application as well. Starting to build that website allowed me to take what I’ve learned and further work on my design and front-end skills. Each week that I learned something new at Talent Path, I’ve been able to incorporate it into my personal website. Since then, I’ve been looking at design on a more personal level and realized that it is a path that I want to take on in my career moving forward. My skills gained at Talent Path have allowed me to work on this branch of website development and explore my technology career options.

After gaining the knowledge and skills I lacked before, I feel like I’m actually ready now to be placed in a technology job rather than when I was a student coming straight out of college. My soft skills have grown as well and presentation wise, I’ve gotten a lot better. I’ve always been an introverted person, so just working on getting better at communicating has been really important and I’ve received a lot of help during this process. I’ve acquired skills that I would not really have if it weren’t for the direction that Talent Path has given me and allowed me to keep learning and gaining experience while waiting to be placed somewhere.
